A Second Wave is Coming—This one is Burnout!

According to the latest research, burnout is reaching unprecedented levels. As we all wrestle with the extraordinary onslaught of change, challenge and dysfunction, traditional online means of support are proving inadequate. Access to an Employment Assistance Program is nice, but it may not meet the needs of those who simply wish to be heard, supported and encouragedto experience the presence of a genuinely interested leader, colleague, friend or family member. Managers who provide arm’s-length, transactional “support programs” are often simply offloading their responsibility to be caring human beings. In the workplace today, the greatest contribution leaders can make is to practice listening, humility, vulnerability and compassion. As a result, employees will feel inspired, and inspiration always trumps anxiety. As this quote from Lao-Tzu reminds us, “If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.” Are you feeling supported and encouraged? Are you supporting and encouraging others?
